NBA Free Agency: Yao Ming, Bargnani, Pargo
Yao’s foot sponsors Trevor Ariza signing – After the Rockets discovered the severity of Yao’s injury, they immediately applied for a “disabled player exception” and that was approved by the league. The NBA agreed that it was very unlikely that Yao Ming would make a return this season, and freed up anough money to bring in free-agent Trevor Ariza, who will switched starting roles with Ron Artest, now a Laker.
- Yao speaks about his injury - “I am optimistic about the future and I will return to playing basketball when my foot has fully healed,” Yao said in a statement released by his agent Wednesday. “My focus is on selecting the best treatment option for my injured foot and committing myself to do what I can to ensure a complete recovery.” As of today, without the Chinese center for the upcoming season, the Rockets have no player taller than 6-9 power forward Luis Scola.
- Bargnani re-signs with Toronto – The Toronto Raptors signed a 5-year extension for former #1 overall draft pick of 2006, Andrea Bargnani. The 7-0 Italian put up career highs of 15.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.2 blocked shots in 78 games last season. Bargnani registered 20 or more points a career-best 23 times and set an NBA record for a starting center by making multiple 3-pointers in 10 consecutive games. The numbers of the contract were not disclosed.
- Jannero Pargo returning to the NBA – After leaving the NBA last summer for a $3.8 million dollar contract with Russian club Moscow Dynamo, Pargo will return to the Chicago Bulls, who Pargo spent his first three years of his career with. A big part of the reason Pargo is returning stateside is because of his experience in Europe. Particularly his Dynamo’s financial woes forced the club to buy out Pargo’s contract midseason. Pargo finished out the season with Greek powerhouse Olympiakos.
- The NBA’s salary cap decreases for next season – For only the second time in its 26-year history, the NBA’s salary cap, which is generally tied to the league’s revenue, will decrease 1.6 percent. The NBA announced Tuesday that the cap for the 2009-10 NBA season will be $57.7 million, down from an all-time high of $58.68 million last season.
